Outdoor sleeping for young children is a practice that is gaining attention around the world, particularly in early childhood education settings. At Little Learners, we are always looking for ways to support children’s wellbeing, development, and happiness. In 2017, we introduced outdoor sleeping into our daily routine as part of this commitment, and it has since become a valued and successful part of our program for children aged 2–6 years.
Improved Sleep Quality in Fresh Air
One of the most significant advantages of outdoor sleeping is the improvement in sleep quality. Fresh air helps regulate breathing and promotes deeper, more restful sleep. Unlike indoor environments, which can sometimes feel stuffy or overly warm, outdoor spaces provide natural ventilation. This helps children fall asleep more easily and stay asleep longer. Many educators and families report that children who nap outdoors wake up more refreshed and in a better mood, ready to engage in learning and play.
Supporting Stronger Immune Systems
Outdoor sleeping also supports children’s immune systems. Regular exposure to fresh air and natural elements can help the body build resilience. Studies and long-standing practices in countries like Denmark and Norway have shown that children who spend more time outdoors, including during sleep, often experience fewer minor illnesses such as colds. While it’s still important to ensure children are dressed appropriately for the weather, being outside can be a gentle and natural way to strengthen overall health.
Building a Connection with Nature
Another important benefit is the connection to nature. Early childhood is a critical time for developing a sense of curiosity and appreciation for the natural world. When children rest outdoors, they become familiar with natural sounds like birds, rustling leaves, and the breeze. These calming sensory experiences can reduce stress and anxiety, helping children feel more relaxed and secure. Over time, this connection to nature can support emotional wellbeing and foster a lifelong respect for the environment.
Supporting Healthy Sleep Patterns and Routines
Outdoor environments also help regulate children’s natural body clocks, or circadian rhythms. Exposure to natural light during the day helps the body understand when it is time to be awake and when it is time to rest. This can lead to more consistent sleep patterns, not only during naps but also at night. For young children, having a predictable and healthy sleep routine is essential for growth, development, and learning.
Safe and Supervised Outdoor Rest
Safety, of course, is always a top priority. Outdoor sleeping at Little Learners is carefully planned and supervised by trained educators. Children are placed in safe, comfortable sleep spaces, such as cots or mats, in shaded and sheltered areas. Weather conditions are always monitored, ensuring children are warm in cooler months and protected from heat and sun exposure during warmer days. Appropriate clothing, blankets, and hydration are all key considerations to ensure every child is comfortable and secure.
Encouraging Positive Behaviour and Easier Transitions
There are also behavioural benefits associated with outdoor rest. Children who spend time outdoors tend to have higher levels of physical activity, which naturally supports better sleep. After active play in the fresh air, their bodies are more ready to rest. This can lead to smoother transitions into nap time and fewer challenges settling down. As a result, the overall daily routine becomes more balanced and enjoyable for both children and educators.
Building Independence and Resilience
Importantly, outdoor sleeping can also promote independence and resilience. Children learn to adapt to different environments and become more flexible in their routines. With gentle guidance and reassurance, they grow more confident in their ability to rest in a variety of settings. This adaptability is an important life skill that supports their development beyond the early years.
Our Commitment at Little Learners
At Little Learners, our goal is to create nurturing environments that support every aspect of a child’s development. Incorporating outdoor sleeping into our daily routine since 2017 reflects this vision by combining the benefits of fresh air, nature, and rest. It is not about replacing indoor sleep entirely, but about offering an alternative that can enhance wellbeing and support healthy growth.
A Natural Approach to Healthy Development
By embracing outdoor rest in a thoughtful and safe way, we can provide children with a unique and enriching experience. The simple act of sleeping under the open sky, surrounded by nature, can have lasting positive effects on their health, mood, and development.
