Nature Kindergarten

Nature Kindergarten - Philosophy

Welcome to our Nature Kindergarten

In 2017 we launched our ground breaking onsite ‘Nature Kindergarten’. Our entire outdoor area is dedicated to engaging our children with the natural environment.

Our outdoor preschool philosophy, which began in Scandinavia over half a century ago, has spread globally due to its demonstrated positive effects on children.

Children that spend more time in nature have improved social and cognitive development, better emotional wellbeing, less illnesses and a multitude of other positive physical, social and emotional outcomes.

Australia is a nation defined by its outdoor environments and many parents and grandparents have memories of being free to roam, to explore the creeks, the beach and the bush.

However, research reveals that one in ten Australian children now play outside once a week or less. The landscape of childhood has changed and in a single generation, we have seen a profound shift from outdoor play to indoor play.

At Little Learners we recognise the role that we can play to support our children to engage with nature, to experience the joy of interacting with the outdoors and to build wellbeing, confidence and resilience.

Our outdoor environments are intentionally structured to spark curiosity, to support our children to develop through experiential learning and to give them a strong foundation for the best start in life.

“Nature is a tool to get children to experience not just the wider world, but themselves.” – Stephen Moss

Several young children wearing colourful hats gather around a raised garden bed at a Nature Kindergarten, planting a green seedling in the soil with small gardening tools under bright sunlight.
